Water Baby by Ross Campbell is another in DC’s ‘Minx’ series of graphic novels for girls, although I think this one is aimed at slightly older teenagers than the ones I’ve read before. Brody is a skinhead, heavy-metal loving, nose-picking surfer girl who has to live with a prosthetic leg after being attacked by a shark. When her untrustworthy ex-boyfriend turns up out fo the blue, they and Brody’s best friend Louisa end up on a disasterous road-trip that brings the two girls closer together.
Not my favourite Minx book but I did like this story. The characters weren’t exactly good role models or even that likeable (except Louisa, who was a Le Tigre fan!) but I’d say their depiction as confident, independant females in a variety of shapes and sizes is refreshing and positive. Brody has an essence of Tank Girl about her, without the random and unnecessary nudity.
