I’ve mentioned Yeah! by Peter Bagge and Gilbert Hernandez on this blog before, when I was reading the original comics. However these were borrowed and sadly had to be returned, so I was over the moon when I saw that they had released the whole collection as a single book. The series was cancelled so the book couldn’t be called a complete story (too many unfinished plotlines) but reading it as a whole it’s still a great concept for a girl comic. Krazy, Woo-woo and Honey are ‘Yeah!’ the least popular band on Earth. But due to their manager’s interplanetary connections, they are actually the biggest band in the universe! Shame they can’t tell anyone back on their home planet! It’s kind of like a sci-fi Hannah Montana, and as always Peter Bagge’s female characters are brilliant: smart, funny, cute and non-patronising.
My main criticism, and what I think is one of the reasons behind this series’ failure, is the fashion. It sounds shallow, and I know it was supposed to be a fun stylistic choice, but the Scooby Doo outfits and beehive hairdos simply don’t look cool to today’s ten year olds. I was also disappointed that the book was in black and white as I loved the bright colours of the original comics.
