Some of my favourites from the small press comics I got at the Alternative Press Fair London and Free Hetherington zine fair Glasgow. Going to these events can be a big eye-opener, there are so many people out there making so much great stuff! As a creator it can make you feel pretty small, but it’s also very exciting to be part of the community. So, in brief…
The Comix Reader: Is a newspaper anthology of London artists, edited by Richard Cowdry. It’s full colour and has a wide variety of high quality stuff on offer. In the new issue (2) my favourites were the pages by Steve Tillotson and Ellen Lindnder. Try and pick up a copy if you can in Glasgow’s Plan B books.
Miss Moti and Cotton Candy: by Kripa Joshi, this is a beautifully illustrated ‘silent’ comic about Miss Moti’s trip up into the clouds. Lovely comic by a lovely lady.
Paper Science 4: by the ‘We are Words and Pictures’ (WAWAP) collective is a similar format the the Comix Reader, featuring some people I’ve mentioned before on this blog such as Philippa Rice and Dan Berry. The theme of this issue is science fiction and my favourite story was ‘Dr Poplowski’s Special Formula’, a slightly creepy tale with lots of fun montages.
Airship: by Sarah McIntyre and David O’Connell is a fun little story about a couple that get tangled up in moustache-centred airship scandal. I really liked this, especially the artwork, but I don’t like moustaches, which I appreciate is totally my problem.
Ok we’re getting there…
The Naughty Hen Song: by Jim Stoten was our the best find at Alternative Press. Not only is it lovely screen print artwork, it’s just a really silly, funny story, and silly, funny stories are the best in my opinion. Need to look out for more of his work now.
And finally A Muppet Wicker Man: Paul O’Connell has done an amazing job at merging stills from the Muppets and The Wicker Man movie to create a unique take on the sinister tale in this nicely presented photocomic.
…and breathe.
