The other week I attended the Glasgow book launch of German graphic novelist Arne Bellstorf’s new title, ‘Baby’s in Black’. His first book to be translated into English, this is the story of 60s German photographer Astrid Kirchherr and the original Beatles bass player, Stuart Sutcliffe. I’ve never been interested in the Beatles and only really went along because it was something to do with comics, plus I liked the look of the artwork on the flyer. But by the end of the interview I couldn’t wait to read this book, and it didn’t disappoint. In fact I loved it. Bellstorf was in conversation with Astrid prior to writing Baby’s in Black, so the story is told from her perspective and it’s clear she has some very fond memories of her tragically short-lived engagement. The book provides a fascinating insight into the exciting culture of 60s Hamburg, and the Beatles early history, but ultimately this is just an incredibly romantic tale.
