I’m a bit obsessed with Charles Burns at the moment, so ‘El Borbah’ was on my reading list as soon as I’d finished Big Baby the other day. These short comics from the 80s are also set in a creepy and sometimes monstrous world, but with quite different in tone. For a start I found them hilarious. El Borbah, for reasons left unexplained, is a hard-line detective who is also a wrestler. He only cares about his paycheck, and insults (and often assaults) anyone who gets in his way. He can smash though walls and likes eating Mexican food. El Borbah solves most of his cases by threatening his suspects with violence, and his findings are always disturbing and unnatural.
