A look at some of the small press my other half picked up at Comica Comiket. I’m so annoyed I couldn’t be there because he got loads of great stuff! Here are my favourites:
Whores of Mensa issue 5: This is a mostly female group from London, and I love how varied the comic is. I thought is was great all-round, but my favourite was ‘Parting Gifts’ by Francesca Cassavetti, a reminscing of childhood birthday parties; train-shaped cakes, cute little boys and inevitable ‘I should have won!’ musical chairs tears included. I also love the weirdness of Tanya Meditzky’s ‘The Party to Change Britain?’. I’ve mentioned her Milkitten comic on this blog before, nice to come across more of her work.
‘People I Know’ by Timothy Winchester and ‘My Cardboard Life’ by Philippa Rice: I’d seen some of these comic books before, in the Rude Britannia exhibition at Tate Britain (the same one my Team Girl Comic may or may not have been part of, I guess we’ll never know, sigh). I really love these! Kind of twee, but they pull it off by being hilarious at the same time. Very, very silly, the best kind of comics.
‘Silky Wilson and the Name Theif’ by Dan Berry: Silky Wilson is a sort of pathetic rennaissance-type character living in modern times, who has a hard-talking Scottish falcon as a companion. Pretty daft tale (in a good way), the story is a bit random on its own so I’m guessing these are characters that have been on several adventures before. One thing I will say: non-Scottish folk should be cautious when trying to transcribe our accent, they usually get it wrong, creating slang that doesn’t exist! But I know what he means :-)
